Civilization: The Way We Live Now

UCCA Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing

Every day and every hour, human civilization expands, evolves, and mutates. Civilization is a major exhibition and book project, featuring the work of 100 of the world’s finest photographers. It addresses and illuminates major aspects of our increasingly global 21st century civilization. It stresses the fact that contemporary civilization is an extremely complex collective enterprise. Never before in human history have so many people been so interconnected, and so dependent on one another. In science and art, at work and play, we increasingly live the collective life.

Co-curated with William A. Ewing this second installation of Civilization has been designed as a labyrinth. The foundations of the exhibition, notably the themes and the core of the artworks, are shared between the MMCA and the UCCA. The structure of the exhibition space is however, very different.

The exhibition design at the UCCA was developed in collaboration with MAX OFFICE with spaces dedicated to each section that follow a very precise path. The spaces dedicated to each theme are of varying shapes that reflect or narrate the core ideas or critical agendas of the section, for example, HIVE is a circular space with independent walls recreating a structure resembling colony or loosely city planning architecture and so on...

The exhibition includes work by artists such as: Thomas Struth, Wang Qingsong, Chris Jordan, Richard Mosse, Han Sungpil, Larry Sultan, Trent Parke, Valérie Belin, Ed Burtynsky, Xing Danwen, Toshio Shibata and others.
