In the late 1970s, at the close of the Cultural Revolution, a group of young, largely auto-didact artists in China endeavored to create artwork that would depart from present norms and reflect individual ideals. On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the first Stars exhibition outside the National Art Museum of China in Beijing, an anniversary publication presents for the first time a comprehensive, English language history of the Stars Group. Piloted by the Stars Art Foundation and published by The Chinese University of Hong Kong Press, the book brings together translated primary documents, documentary photography, historical writings, and new scholarship about the group from leading art historians in the field of contemporary Chinese art.
